The Mother in Law Sweater

This sweater was pretty easy to make, all in all. I must be getting better at this stuff. Also, it only took about 2.5 months. Geez.

In general, made me love cardigans. A lot.

Eowyn Rose, age 3 - Christmas Knitted Dress

The story of this dress: I had never knit a garment before, but at SnB in Santa Monica there was a lot of talk about "top down" stuff, so that put an idea in my head. Then, once again through SnB, I traded some Veronica Mars DVDs for some beautiful red cotton yarn. So it became a Christmas shirt, no pattern, just some rough measurements and vauge ideas. Eventually I consulted Ann Budd's sweater book to check my proportions, but essentially this shirt that became a dress (at the request of my kid.. and the nice SnB lady had given me SIX skeins!) was instinctively knitted from the top down. Eowyn was very nice to try it on for me at various stages, so it never went off track, although there are a million mistakes if you look closely.

Vilma, Joanne and Jan at Needlepoints West helped me to conceptualize this dress, including how to begin with four balls of yarn, how to cast off for a collar, etc. They really held my hand through the most difficult parts of the dress, and Joanne was the genius who showed me how to give the skirt a lovely flare as I knitted down to the base.

My biggest blunder was the collar - I had NO IDEA how to pick up stitches there, so my fumbly knitting made the collar super wide and the bodice became this horrible floppy awful thing; the dress was drooping off her shoulders. I probably should have ripped it out, but my next door neighbor and I decided to bunch it up instead by threading a piece of yarn at the base of the collar, and good gracious, that did the trick-- so far it's been holding together.

Anyway, just wanted to brag, not only does this dress look great on Eowyn Rose, but she loves wearing it!
